New LEGO Star Wars Diorama Sets Are Now Available

LEGO has just released three new Star Wars diorama sets that depict memorable scenes from the original movie trilogy. They’re part of LEGO’s 18+ age designation, which basically means they’re intended to be built and displayed. A month out from the original announcement, they’re finally available now.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I gotta say, these sets look incredible. They’re just these perfect little encapsulations of some of the most iconic scenes in the original Star Wars movies. Each one is stuffed full of details for fans of the films.

The trash compactor one has the whole crew trapped in the bowels of the Death Star, about to be crushed to death. Han and Luke are wearing their stolen Storm Trooper armor. Chewie is holding the metal beam they’ll use to try to stop the walls from pressing in. Leia is wondering why these buffoons freed her from her cell just to get her crushed to death in a trash compactor.

The walls actually do move, so you can re-create the scene. And perhaps best of all, on the back side of the set are little R2-D2 and C-3PO minifigures who are huddled in front of the control panel trying to stop the walls from closing in. It’s great.

The Death Star Trench Run diorama is an intricately designed cutaway of one of the most famous scenes in movie history. It has Luke’s X-Wing racing ahead of three TIE Fighters that are blasting away, trying to stop him. It’s a more scaled-down set, so it doesn’t include any minifigures, but anyone who sees it will instantly recognize the scene.

Last up is the Dagobah Jedi Training diorama, which includes Yoda’s hut in its lovely, swampy environment. You can see the X-Wing’s wing sticking out of the dark green waters. It includes minifigures of Luke, Yoda, and a very muddy R2. Big trees with drooping vines provide a tall backdrop for the diorama. Yoda’s hut even has an interior area.

Each of these sets includes a plaque with a famous quote from the scene depicted. They’re all the same depth, so they’ll fit on any standard bookshelf. This is the first batch of LEGO Star Wars dioramas, but more are in the works.
